My wife and I saw them for the NakedSelf tour back in 2000 and it was our reference for the best concert we've ever been to (we've seen a lot of musicians & bands over our lifetimes of varied genres to boot). So no brainer to see them again and once again they hit it out of the park. Matt Johnson & band mates are A+ musicians who bring you into the music with passionate playing and singing. Lyrics are genius in telling musical stories. To see Barrie Cadogan as the lead guitar was a super bonus. I'll put it to you this way, which speaks excessive volumes ...Packed house and without sounding embellished ...probably 10-15% of crowd were musicians. This band is so clear, tight and absolute ear candy. So there you have it!
Incredible! 2 1/2 hours of amazing music, audience involvement, and a great atmosphere! I have never experienced an artist playing their new album for one set, and then all the hits for the second. I would go again tomorrow!
The the returned after 25 years with a new album and a stunning live performance that brought the appreciative audience to their feet Matt Johnson presented a two part show, a "sit down"half, consisting of the entire new Ensouled album and a "stand up"half when he pulled out the old favorites and some deep cuts, some of them newly arranged, that made us all fans in the 80's and 90's. The much longer second part was much more than nostalgia. It was the presentation of a great talent and a unique vision of the world that remains dark and foreboding yet punctuated with light and optimism. The excellent musicianship and a subtle light show that suited the Orpheum's stately beauty were a treat for the faithful who were hoping for a triumphant return and got exactly that.
So Nostalgic, Great band! Matt Johnson’s lyrics speak to the state of the world today, history repeating itself! Listen to Heartland, very poignant lyrics.
Album quality sound!! Matt's voice is still spot on!!!
It was probably a bit much for Matt Johnson to expect that the glacial pace of the new record and the audience's relative unfamiliarity of the material could justify a starting set with all the new album's songs. Beautiful arrangements, sure, but a show that subbed in about five older songs (rather than relegating them to the second set) would have been a better choice. Felt bad for the Orpheum ushers trying to get people to stop standing in the aisles in the second set - that was a losing proposition, as the crowd needed to stand to fully enjoy the show.
luv the orpheum , a great crowd that night ... security was silly even matt johnson said something
Great to see The The live. My only complaint is they played their whole new album as a first set (12+ songs). It created a slow start and low energy for the concert. Majority of people were hearing these songs for the first time. By the time the classics came out (which is why people were there) there seemed to be a bit of a tired/deflated vibe.
J’ai beaucoup apprécié le spectacle. Un excellent band, très « tight ». Matt Johnson a toujours cette voix unique! Les chansons issues de l’album Soul Mining m’ont donné des frissons et m’ont ramené dans mes années de clubbing! 🤩🪩
